Mario Kart 8 for Wii U
Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U is, as what everyone would expect from a game that has already gotten 8 installments, an incredibly well polished game. Where Nintendo manages to surprise players is with how they refined the gameplay to become even so much better than before. This sequel is simply, so much faster. Every single vehicle moves, accelerates, and just plain looks faster than anything else. The power ups are mostly designed to help you keep moving forward as well. And best part of all, it all flows out of your screen in glorious 60 FPS, making everything single exhilarating moment of the race a visual splendor.
Formula One Racer 2012
With the dozens of racing games available to play on the browser, it is easy to be overwhelmed with many Mario Kart clones and other simplistic racers. There are a few games that make use of Unity’s engine to deliver realistic driving simulations, but for the most part, most of the titles we see are mediocre. And then there are games like Formula Racer 2012. This is not some fancy 3D style racer with bells and trimmings. This is a straight-forward, accelerate and steer kind of racer. But what makes it stand out is the delivery. Taking cues from arcade hits like Sega’s classic Out Run, F1 Racer bring the best in simplistic sprite based animations, rolling 2D backgrounds (to simulate a 3D track), and the fun of having to speed past 31 other competitors to get the pole position.
Freeway Fury 2
Freeway Fury 2 is proof that sometimes, all it takes to make a good game is to have a decent enough concept then give it a good game mechanic. This is a game about driving a car in a 2D, aerial view environment, and reaching a specific distance in a specific amount of time. What makes it so interesting is the fact that instead of avoiding the traffic, you grab it for your own. Yep, in this game, the car you start with is not important. To make it to the goal, you will jump from one car to another. On paper, it sounds like a little weird, but when you play it, it becomes hard to put down.
